"The Surge" - aka a reawakening in Jewish life post-October 7

Jul 23, 2025

While antisemitism has grown leaps and bounds since Hamas invaded Israel on October 7, 2023, murdering some 1200 civilians in Israel and kidnapping some 250 - both alive and dead, there has been a marked interest in returning to Jewish life among Jews who had left it. And there has also been a marked increase in non-Jews seeking to learn about Judaism, either for conversion to Judaism or simply to learn.

This return of Jews to Judaism has been called The Surge - ironic, perhaps, given that Hamas called their invasion a Flood - but it is noticeable, with a study finding 43% expressing an interest in returning to Judaism, and 23% having actually started on the path by taking a class or attending a synagogue service. Those are huge numbers.

If there are roughly 5 million Jews in the United States - estimates vary - 43% would be something like 2,150,000 Jews who want to learn more about Judaism. If you're one of those 2 million plus, please join us at Judaism Online.

And if you're one of the 326 million non-Jews in the US, and you'd like to learn more about Judaism, please also join us at Judaism Online.

You can learn about Judaism at your own pace, wherever you are.
